Bringing IgnitedFuture Mentorship Home to Abbi
Over the years, one question has continued to stay with me.
How can the knowledge, opportunities, experiences, and lessons that some of us have acquired through education and international exposure become more accessible to young people from the communities that shaped us?
For me, one of those communities is Abbi.
Through IgnitedFuture Community, an arm of the Raphael Onuku Foundation, I have had the opportunity to mentor students and young graduates interested in postgraduate education, scholarships, research opportunities, and international academic development. This work has included helping applicants understand graduate admissions, identify funding opportunities, strengthen academic CVs and personal statements, search for appropriate programmes, communicate with prospective supervisors, and approach scholarship applications more strategically. Visit the Raphael Onuku Foundation website to learn more.
I now want to intentionally extend that mentorship to young people from my hometown.
IgnitedFuture Community is therefore organizing a special online Postgraduate Study and Scholarship Mentorship for eligible Abbi graduates.
The purpose of this programme is simple. We want to identify academically strong and genuinely motivated Abbi sons and daughters who are interested in pursuing further education abroad and provide them with practical guidance on how to begin and navigate that journey.
Who Should Apply
For this first edition, we are particularly interested in Abbi indigenes who
- have completed a bachelor's degree
- graduated with a First Class or Second Class Upper degree classification
- are genuinely interested in postgraduate education abroad
- are willing to research programmes and scholarship opportunities independently
- are prepared to write, revise, and improve their own application materials
- are open to constructive feedback
- are willing to meet deadlines and take responsibility for their progress
Academic performance is important, but motivation matters just as much.
This mentorship is intended for people who are prepared to work. It is not designed for someone who simply wants another person to complete applications on their behalf.
What the Mentorship Will Cover
Participants will receive guidance on several important aspects of postgraduate study abroad, including identifying suitable Master's and PhD programmes, understanding funded graduate opportunities, searching for scholarships, preparing competitive academic CVs and personal statements, approaching prospective supervisors where appropriate, and developing a more strategic approach to graduate applications.
We will also discuss some of the common misconceptions surrounding international education and scholarships.
Many talented graduates believe studying abroad is only possible for people from wealthy families. Others assume that scholarship opportunities are reserved for people with special connections. Some simply do not know where to begin, which opportunities are legitimate, or how competitive applications are developed.
The purpose of this mentorship is to replace uncertainty with information and direction.
What This Programme Is Not
This programme is not a scholarship award.
Participation does not guarantee admission to any university, scholarship funding, employment, or a visa.
IgnitedFuture Community will provide mentorship, guidance, experience, and support. Applicants will still be responsible for researching opportunities, preparing their applications, meeting requirements, and completing the necessary work themselves.

My hope is that this becomes more than a single online event.
If the knowledge and opportunities that some of us have acquired can help another young person from Abbi take a meaningful step toward postgraduate education, scholarship opportunities, research, or a stronger academic future, then that knowledge should not stop with us.
This is one small way of bringing mentorship home.
